January 24th PHOCUSED Rally

Mahalo!

On Tuesday, January 24th, PHOCUSED held its annual "Voice of the People" rally.  Thank you to everyone who helped plan the event and came out in support of restoring the cuts to essential services.  With hundreds of people gathered together in solidarity around the Capitol Rotunda, we sent a powerful message to the legislature that day that people are ready to stand up and demand that the safety net of our Aloha State be restored and the most vulnerable people among us receive the services they need.

The flier below is what the people at the rally handed out to their legislators after the rally.

COALITION RECOMMENDATIONS

At the PHOCUSED annual meeting, the Governor and his staff invited the Health and Human service sector to collaboratively work with the Administration before the next legislative session, and to inform the administration of potential problems in specific subject matter areas.  PHOCUSED facilitated meetings with various coalitions with the intent to provide recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature.

Below is a list of the coalitions that participated.  Please click on the name of each sector to see their specific recommendations:

Mental Health

Domestic violence

Youth Services

Substance Abuse Prevention

Substance Abuse Treatment

Developmental Disabilities

We hope that these types of facilitated discussions will assist the Governor and the Legislature in formulating their policies for this next year.  This is something PHOCUSED would like to continue to do every year.  It is our hope that these efforts will expand to other coalition participation in the future.

ANNUAL MEETING

PHOCUSED held our annual meeting on Wednesday, July 27th , at the Catholic Charities Campus in Keeamoku.  Governor Neil Abercrombie and members of his staff were our guests.  With 200 people, we were very happy with the turnout. Our Keynote Speaker was Annabel Chotzen, and we were also entertained by to two community groups: Harmony’s Hula of Lanakila MP Senior Center and the Signing Stars of Goodwill Industries Hawaii.  Our first address was from the Governor, followed by a panel discussion with his Department Heads and key staff members.
